Dec 28: Russell meets Australia - Day 1

It is 8am. My good friend Mick meets me at the airport. Mick is originally Australian, but has been working in Calgary for 8 years now. He is home for the holidays, and has agreed to play host to me for 10 days before he heads back to Canada.

I am welcomed by drizzle and cloud... Apparently it has been for a couple of days. With no formal plans or agenda we decide to meet up with Mick's buddy Oscar. Oscar is a Chilean oceanographer, who knows Mick through a common friend. He lives in Manly, on the North side of the Sydney Harbour. Manly is one of the biggest beaches in Sydney - a hotspot for sunlovers when the surf is good.

Since the weather is a little lousy, we decide to enjoy an indoor Australian tradition: watching cricket on TV. Like baseball, it is a sport meant to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. We join the current match in its third day of five as Australia faces off against Pakistan... which they will continue to do repeatedly throughout the coming month.

In order to truly appreciate cricket, you should be enjoying a beer. We decided early on that this would be an excellent opportunity to do a little taste testing. Our sampling got a little out of hand when we later crossed the harbor to met up with our good friend Ken back on the other side of the harbour. Ken is a sales manager for one of the big brewing companies, and as such has an exceptionally well stocked fridge. In the end I think I had tried at least one of everything. Of all of the tricks to beat jetlag, I think this has been the most successful to date
